Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Reception Curriculum Map 2019-2020

At Beech Grove Primary School we are exceptionally proud of our Early Years Unit approach to teaching and learning.

Our dedicated and committed team of teachers and teaching assistants have utilised learning potential by providing continuous access to all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Resources are plentiful and our pupils enjoy provision that is generous, aids curiosity and inspires learning. Pupils in our reception classes benefit from free-flow inside the unit and outside. Our youngest pupils quickly demonstrate high levels of wellbeing and engagement within the environment; accessing challenging resources and self-selecting from a wealth of zones within the open plan classroom.

At Beech Grove we believe that every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. We recognise that a child’s experiences in the Early Years have a major impact on their future life chances. We aim to build strong partnerships with parents so that together, we can provide the secure foundation that children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.

Within the EYFS curriculum we focus on the ‘Prime Areas of Learning’, which are: Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Physical development; Communication and Language, and the ‘Specific Areas of Learning’, which are: Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design’.

In all that we do we seek to provide:

  • quality and consistency
  • a secure foundation
  • partnership working
  • equality of opportunity

Our overarching principles that shape our practice in the early years unit are:

  • every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured
  • children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
  • children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between teaching staff and parents and/or carers; and
  • children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates.
